How the University of British Columbia (UBC) improved student engagement using Bounce.
Key Takeaways
+15% more campus events attended per student
+16% more campus events hosted per club
+51% more club revenue per attendee
74% of the student body at UBC was active on Bounce by the end of the first semester
In 2023, the UBC Alma-Mater Society (AMS) signed a multi-year agreement to implement Bounce as the official community and events platform for AMS clubs. The AMS, as UBC’s Student Union, manages hundreds of clubs and on-campus organizations.
The student union’s main goal with Bounce was to boost student engagement and build a stronger campus community through in-person experiences. Together, Bounce and the UBC AMS aimed to measure student engagement as a result of:
(A) Student attendance at in-person events
(B) Frequency of events hosted by on-campus clubs
(C) The impact of hosted events on club awareness and participation
Here is what UBC experienced
+15% more events attended per student
With Bounce, campus events were significantly more visible to UBC students. The radius-based social feed centralized campus clubs and activities, allowing students to RSVP to events, join clubs, and connect with other students in just a few clicks.
Further contributing to event awareness on campus, Bounce’s social app notifications were key to boosting attendance. These notifications alerted students when friends RSVP’d to an event, encouraging them to attend as a group instead of going alone. Increasing and publicizing event attendance produced an environment where students were prompted to connect with each other more often.
"I can scroll through the campus feed and see events from different clubs and RSVP right away. It’s great. At this point everyone at UBC knows what Bounce is"
- Urvee, President of Generocksity club at UBC
(2023-2024)
+16% more campus events hosted per club
With Bounce, student clubs and organizations were empowered to host more events using the platform’s quick event creation tools. Club executives spent less time creating event pages and eliminated the need to manually process and report payments.
Clubs could count on Bounce to amplify events and were generally more confident that they would hit attendance goals. Due to the fact that the platform is designed to build and nurture an engaged community of event attendees, students who attended club events continued to stay “in the loop” via social notifications and centralized feeds.
"Everything was really seamless. We also definitely have more engagement at our events since we started to sell tickets on Bounce"
- Ryanne, President of UBC’s largest social club: The CVC (2023-2024)
+51% more club revenue per attendee
Campus events were significantly easier to promote on campus using Bounce’s numerous event marketing tools. Club executives could spend less time worrying about attendance and more time investing in bigger, better and more unique event experiences on campus.
By improving the event experience for students, clubs were able to earn 51% more revenue per attendee through Bounce compared to the previous school year. This provided significant support for clubs to fund their growth on campus year-round.
Throughout all of the success UBC had during the first year in the partnership, perhaps the greatest accomplishment of all was sucessfully getting more than two thirds of the student body to use the same, centralized platform for their events, clubs, and social life.
Adopting new solutions into a campus is a notoriously tough challenge, but Bounce’s usability and relevancy as the premier social app for students meant that onboarding the campus was as easy as flipping a switch.
By the end of the first semester of the partnership, 74% of the student body at UBC was active on Bounce and using it for events and engaging with the community.
